HMS Victory Admiral Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) in Portsmouth
Using Google Earth to explore Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, I spot one of the most iconic warships in British history — HMS Victory.
Launched in 1765, HMS Victory was Admiral Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Under his command, the ship led the Royal Navy to a major victory over the French and Spanish fleets, cementing British naval dominance.
At 227 feet long and armed with over 100 guns, Victory was a powerful first-rate ship of the line. It saw action in multiple conflicts, including the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary Wars, before being preserved due to its historic significance.
Unfortunately, on Google Earth the ship is partially covered by a protective canopy, so only the bow and stern are clearly visible.
Today, HMS Victory is dry-docked in Portsmouth as a museum ship. It offers a rare look at 18th-century naval warfare and stands as one of the world’s oldest surviving warships.
