A major administrative action has shaken Kishtwar district after the Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) ordered the withholding of salaries of several Block Development Officers (BDOs) over extremely poor performance under the MGNREGA scheme. Despite a target of generating 15,000 persondays in April 2026, the district reportedly achieved only 70 persondays, raising serious concerns about implementation failures and the impact on rural job card holders.

The administration stated that repeated instructions, approved action plans, and official targets were already communicated to the concerned officers, but the execution on the ground remained negligible. Officials warned that the poor performance directly affected the rights of rural workers who depend on MGNREGA for employment opportunities.

Several officers had earlier received show-cause notices, but their replies were termed unsatisfactory by the administration. Following a detailed review, salaries of the concerned BDOs were withheld until further orders. The administration has now directed officers to improve employment generation, complete pending PMAY houses, recover dues, and submit reports on time, warning of stricter disciplinary action in the future.
