Community fights to save its only birthing center

A community in Upstate New York is fighting to keep its birthing center open. The midwife-led Burdett Birth Center in Troy, N.Y., helped deliver nearly 900 babies last year. Yet St. Peter’s Health Partners of Trinity Health, the Catholic organization that owns the center, announced it will close the facility to save money. The announcement has sparked protests and public hearings. Supporters of the birthing center argue the closure would be dangerous for pregnant people, especially those with low income and from communities of color.
