On April 17 (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump once again pressured Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, calling for an immediate interest rate cut. Trump posted on social media, criticizing Powell for always being “late and wrong,” and added, “The sooner he’s gone, the better.”
Just a day earlier, Powell had delivered a speech at the Economic Club of Chicago, warning that the recently announced tariff increases by the U.S. government were far greater than expected. He said that higher tariffs would fuel inflation and hinder economic growth, with potentially greater-than-anticipated consequences—making the Fed’s monetary policy decisions even more challenging.
