In Gunsmoke #281, "Grass," Harry Pope, a widower from Boston, has built a modest sod hut on the prairie where he's trying to raise corn and pigs. But mysterious nighttime visitors he believes are Indians have him living in terror.
When Marshal Matt Dillon advises Pope to arm himself for protection, it sets off a tragic chain of events. Pope shoots and kills Joe Carter, one of rancher Ned Honeyman's cowboys, thinking he's defending himself against Indian raiders. Earl Brant, who witnessed the shooting, demands justice for his friend's death.
But Matt's investigation reveals a cruel truth: Carter and Brant had been tormenting Pope for months, pretending to be Indians "for fun," driving the frightened man to the point where he would sit in his hut and cry. When Pope refuses to abandon his homestead despite the threats against him, Brant takes justice into his own hands, shooting the unarmed farmer in the back as he weeds his corn.
