Lecture: Pop Brasil - Dr. Adele Nelson

Focused on the impressive array of Brazilian artworks included in the exhibition Pop América, 1965–1975, this lecture considers how artists, working during a repressive dictatorship, challenged conventions and easy categories of culture, from high/low to fine arts/popular.

Dr. Adele Nelson, Assistant Professor of Art History and Associate Director of the Center for Latin American Visual Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, addresses the work of six Brazilian artists prominently featured in the exhibition, including Rubens Gerchman and Antônio Henrique Amaral. As curator Esther Gabara persuasively argues, these artists—and artists across América—deployed “pop” not as a style, but as a verb.
