The Shape Of Our Solar System: Visually Explained

Check out what the Solar System REALLY looks like! Check out why it's a disc / frisbee shape in this edition of Visually Explained!

Some youtubers (like Scott Manley) get into the science behind everything. Some youtubers focus on the news. Some (like The Everyday Astronaut) focus on rocketry. My goal is to dive into the wonderful world of our technological advancement, exploring how our reality is slowly becoming more and more like the science fiction I grew up with. Before jumping into the nitty-gritty, I wanted to explore the shape our immediate neighborhood: the Solar system. It's always good to orient yourself and know which way is up and which way is down, especially when it comes to space which can be such a tough 3D environment to understand.

I found that the explanations out there about why the solar system is so flat have been overly complicated, and don't quite get to the point. So I decided to do some research on my own, and come up with a better more visual explanation of how our reality shapes up. This is how the solar system really works.

Scientists say that 4.6 billion years ago, our solar system was the shape of a cloud. As time went on the cloud's gravity pulled inwards and inertia pushed outwards, the matter began swirling around, eventually becoming a disk. We call this disk a proto-planetary disk. And through our telescopes RIGHT NOW we can see other planetary systems that are forming.

The conclusion I drew from all of my research is that our flatness is caused by gravity and inertia. The reason things fatten out can really can be simplified down to the fact that the solar system is spinning. So in this video I talk about why a spinning motion flattens things out, and discuss mass and gravity and how they affect the shape of the objects in our solar system. At the end of the video I try not to blow my own mind talking about the galaxy, or as I now call it, the grand frisbee. Remember, everything in our solar system IS connected...... by the Sun's gravity.

In conclusion, I think it's so cool how self gravity causes concentrations of matter to form into stars with a discs around them. It all makes sense when you look at Saturn and when you think about the oblate shapes of our spinning spheres.

So if you liked this video, subscribe up. People are always saying click the little bell, but do you really want to get notifications about galaxy stuff? Perhaps click the bell if you want to be at the cutting edge of my upcoming video series I'm calling "Science Reality” which I’m really excited about. I just wanted to get this video out there first because I think it’s important to understand the shape of the solar system before we start exploring it. I'll be discussing SpaceX, Life Support, Settlement Sustainability, Orbital Mechanics and of course Artificial Gravity. Thanks for watching, and thanks for sharing your thoughts in the comments.
