Sharp A2 ePaper EP-CA22: EXO/IGZO backplane, E Ink Spectra 6, dithering, battery signage
Sharp walks through an A2-format ePaper signage panel where the key change is the drive electronics: a proprietary EXO/IGZO TFT backplane bonded to a colour E Ink film, aimed at tighter cell control, faster page-to-page switching, and lower energy per update while keeping the bistable “0 W” image hold once content is set. https://www.sharpdisplays.eu/p/eeme/en/launch/rp/new-kind-of-display.xhtml

HDMI® Technology is the foundation for the worldwide ecosystem of HDMI-connected devices; integrated with displays, set-top boxes, laptops, audio video receivers and other product types. Because of this global usage, manufacturers, resellers, integrators and consumers must be assured that their HDMI® products work seamlessly together and deliver the best possible performance by sourcing products from licensed HDMI Adopters or authorized resellers. For HDMI Cables, consumers can look for the official HDMI® Cable Certification Labels on packaging. Innovation continues with the latest HDMI 2.2 Specification that supports higher 96Gbps bandwidth and next-gen HDMI Fixed Rate Link technology to provide optimal audio and video for a wide range of device applications. Higher resolutions and refresh rates are supported, including up to 12K@120 and 16K@60. Additionally, more high-quality options are supported, including uncompressed full chroma formats such as 8K@60/4:4:4 and 4K@240/4:4:4 at 10-bit and 12-bit color.

Rather than behaving like an LCD, the display behaves like a print surface with a compute layer. Colour ePaper is still electrophoretic “ink” in microcapsules moved toward or away from the surface and then held, so Sharp focuses on colour management and pseudo-tone rendering: dithering and halftone-style algorithms (very printer-inspired) to push perceived gamut, stabilize skin tones and brand colours, and avoid obvious banding in gradients.
The A2 class (around 28.6", ePoster EP-CA22) targets poster replacement where refresh rate is not the point but legibility, viewing angle, and low heat are. You can run it from mains or treat it as a battery-first node, and the booth setup highlights a practical ecosystem around the panel: flat wall mounting, perpendicular “blade” mounting, floor stands, and autonomous battery options, with software partners for content scheduling and remote updates.
Filmed at ISE 2026 Barcelona, the main idea is that EXO-style backplane control plus print-grade image processing is how ePaper gets closer to “designed” colour without pretending to be video signage. If your content changes on a cadence of minutes to days (menus, wayfinding, retail messaging, corporate notices), spending power on the update and on-calibration, instead of continuous backlight and refresh, is a sensible trade.
