Archaeology 101: How to spot pseudoarchaeology

Here's what to watch for when consuming any media claiming to be archaeology. If any of these are true, what you're watching or reading or listening to might in fact be pseudoarchaeology not archaeology.

Red Flags:
1. Sensational claims - "everything you know is wrong" or dramatic world-changing theories.
2. No peer review - only published on a personal blog, book, or YouTube channel.
3. No context - focuses on a single artifact or monument without discussing the surrounding site.
4. Cherry-picking - ignores evidence that doesn't fit the theory.
5. Conspiratorial framing - claims archaeologists are hiding the "truth."
6. Cultural erasure - credits aliens or outsiders instead of the actual (often indigenous) builders.
