No More Mold! Fleck 5600SXT 64000 Grain Water Softener Digital SXT Whole House System
Affiliate Amazon link to the one we got: https://amzn.to/2SXJPZx from Pentair, and made by Fleck. Update as of 1/31/2020: it's listed at $646.87
We had Culligan come test our water since it felt pretty hard for a new build. We had a 9/10 hardness. The rest of the readings were fine, but the hardness was creating water spots, pink residue and allowing mold to grow in our bathrooms. We were quoted at 2500 for their base model which included a 10-year warranty and installation. I thought that was a bit expensive, so I looked around online for other options.
I'm not much of a plumber, but I thought getting the unit shipped via Amazon and installed by a local contractor would provide the same bang for my buck as the name-brand units. After reading about various models, I found the Fleck 5600SXT 64,000 Grain Water Softener Digital SXT Metered Whole House System was the best rated for the price I wanted to pay. I then found a local plumbing company to quote me on installation. After shopping around, the lowest quote I could find was $500. The reason being that they would have to run the drain pretty far, and it would take time to make sure everything was working correctly before they left (a couple flush cycles). Whatever, I know they were over charging, but at the end of the day, I get my 10-year warranty and I'm still paying over $1000 less than the big-name brands, and after more research, I found that this model is commonly used by commercial properties, so it must be pretty good.
We put the settings exactly the way the manual recommends. It took a day or two to really feel like the water was soft - not slimy, surprisingly, like many say happens when you install a water softener. It takes time to work all the hard water out of the hot water tank and the rest of the lines. After a couple weeks, we noticed there were no more water spots on the shower doors, and after we cleaned all the mold from around the shower and toilets, it didn't come back. We still keep everything clean using regular shower sprays once a month and a squeegee every day to keep it dry, but that's about it. No more cleaning on my hands and knees every weekend just to have it come back days later. Hard water really was the source of all our mold problems.
