Hey from Chernobyl Exclusion Zone! My name is Victoria and I wanna tell you about our life.
Me, my mom, my sister and my brother live near Chernobyl, where an awful tragedy happened in 1986. It was a nuclear explosion that killed a lot of people, and broke a lot of lives.
That day, when the tragedy happened, Mom was 6 and she lived in that home, where we live now. It’s Chernobyl ‘s outskirts. My dad was 10, he was no so lucky and he lived in Chernobyl. That’s why he had been ill from radiation for all his life and he died at 43.
Of course, Mom’s health suffered from the radiation too. So we are quite puzzled how could she manage to give birth to 3 kids.
You, probably wonder why we are still living there? Honestly, we tried to leave the Exclusion Zone and live a normal life somewhere far away from here, but it was a big fail. Well, I still know some people, who could somehow fit in the society.
The thing is that “Chernobyl kids” have gene mutations. For example, my thyroid does not carry out its functions.
You can look at my eyes’ size. They aren’t scared or surprised. They are under the influence of my thyroid. I had to take meds all the time, or I’ll die.
But I think that I have such eyes not only because of the disease. The thing is that I can see in the dark. So when I’m in pitch darkness, I don’t panic and I don’t try to find the flashlight.
This extra-power once saved me and my brother, when we got lost in the forest. That day we went to the city to buy some food, but on the way home our bus got broken, and we had to walk.
We decided to do a shortcut. We didn’t notice we lost the road after the sun went down. My brother was scared. But I took his hand and brought him back home.
My sister also has a mutation. She was born with 3 arms, but it’s hard to call her disabled, because her third hand is faster and stronger, than the two others.
This makes her just an indispensable assistant in the kitchen. She can slice a lot of vegetables in just a minute.
My brother is the youngest one in our family. My parents hoped he won’t get radiated. But despite our expectations, he was born with six fingers on each hand, that is, he has 12 fingers on both hands in total.
In addition, he is a magnet-man, he is able to magnet and hold metal objects with his body.
His superpower often helps us to find lost gold jewelry and other small metal objects.
Now you understand why we just can’t live in a normal society? No-one would accept us. For them, we are mutants, outcasts. We better stay here in our world.
Moreover, we are not the only ones who decided to stay in the Exclusion Zone. There are also ten or more families living there. So, we never feel lonely or bored.
Of course, half of our neighbors are some old people who find it difficult to change something in their lives, but there are some young people too, who just «have not found themselves» outside the Zone.
We got lucky. There’s a medical assistant among us who can help us if we don’t feel well.
There’s also a teacher, who gives us basic knowledge of the school program. So, we all know how to read, count and write. We also know something of geography and anatomy.
For some reason, many people think that we live a poor life and even starve, when they learn about our existence. But this is not true at all.
For example, I perform in show programs with my sister and brother. Do you remember about our extra-powers? So, we perform about once a week in the evenings. And just in an hour each of us earns more than, for example, some office clerk does for a month of work.
In addition, journalists often come to us, and they also pay us for the interviews.
We save most of the money we earn and hope to build a cottage village with its own infrastructure in future instead of our village.
Sometimes there are some uninvited guests, of course. And we are not happy to see them. They usually come with bad intentions.
Once I woke up at night and heard some noise behind the window. I woke up my mom and with a special warning system woke up the neighbours. This is kinda tube that goes through all the houses in our village.
Within a few minutes, the men living with us caught several young guys.
It turned out this was a group of young genetic scientists who learned about our existence and they tried to agree on the experiments on us and taking DNA samples. But they were sent back where they came from. We are not lab rats or something.
