Making a Modern Leather Coaster Set

Leather Coasters are a good simple project for beginning leather crafters or anyone looking for a quick, fun project. We like making leather coasters because you can make them as simple or as complicated as you want - you can stitch them by hand or leave them plain, you can make them in any shape, and you can use almost any type of leather that grabs your attention!

We wanted to make a leather coaster set that looked a bit more modern in an arts-and-crafts way, so we designed a leather stand to display the leather coasters while they are not in use. We then decided on using square coasters and displaying them on end like a diamond - we cut out the leather by hand, glued it to a backing of vegetable tanned leather so that our leather coasters are reversible, and used a saddle stitch with poly threads to make them nice and strong.

when you make leather coasters it is important to condition them so that any moisture does not harm them permanently. It is ok if leather gets wet, you just need to make sure that leather has been treated with a wax or oil-based conditioner so that the water does not penetrate the surface without drying as this can cause mold. When properly conditioned, leather coasters will take on very beautiful patina from the repeated water marks, and look absolutely beautiful displayed on a table even when not in use!
