Rio Grande Moffat Tunnel Route During the Southern Pacific Era 1994! Since 1989, the Southern Pacific was operating trains over the old Denver & Rio Grande Western Moffat Tunnel Route, between Denver and the Dotsero Cutoff near Glenwood Springs, Colorado. By 1994, a mix of Rio Grande and Southern Pacific motive power commanded these trains over the breathtaking Rocky Mountains and through the six-mile Moffat Tunnel under the Continental Divide. Two years later the SP would be absorbed into the massive Union Pacific system, along with the Moffat Tunnel Route.
