Road Trip to Cincinnati - Skyline Chili and Over the Rhine!

Fall is in the air. The leaves are beginning to transform the midwestern landscape into a brilliant array of crimson, orange, and yellow, a vibrant display that makes the sprawling open road that much more alluring in the autumn - the perfect time to venture off on a road trip.

Cincinnati, Ohio is the destination! One of the most unique cities in the United States. I had an Ohioan once tell me that Cincinnati was the most southern Northern city - not purely in geographical terms but in the culture, architecture, and cuisine. It's true it rests along the Ohio River on the border of Kentucky so it does have some influence that feels alien to the midwest (This same Ohioan also said that Cleveland was the western most East Coast city and Columbus your quintessential midwest metropolis and honestly I can see some truth in these assertions having traveled to both.).

Cincinnati is the perfect Fall destination. Its neighborhood Over-the-Rhine is one of the largest historically intact urban neighborhoods in the United States with one of the largest collections of buildings from the mid to late 1800's. The architecture is incredible!

The neighborhood was full of German immigrants throughout the 19th century and they brewed a lot of beer - at the time the most breweries per capita in the USA and Cincinnati was declared the Beer Capitol of the World in 1890. Perfect place to celebrate Oktoberfest season!

I was hoping to share a beer at the oldest surviving brewery - Christian Morelein but the tap house is currently closed due to the pandemic. It's located in a rough neighborhood north of Liberty Street in Over-the Rhine, but worth the trek. I was able to tour the brewery back in 2016 and hope to again someday. We settled with a couple beers at Rhinegeist Brewery instead which is a newer craft brewery opened in 2013 in the old Christian Morelein bottling plant. Rhinegeist is a modern Cincy favorite and a phenomenal brewery and tap house!

There are also underground tunnels from the beer brewing days that stretch for blocks under the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, they were forgotten and rediscovered in 2008. Now they do underground brewery tours that also includes a crypt!

Cincinnati is also famous for their unique style of Chili which includes spaghetti noodles and a large pile of shredded cheese. Skyline Chili is arguably the most popular Cincy stye chili restaurant chain and one of my favorites! There's plenty other fantastic chili spots but only had time for one in this video.

Also highlighted along the way a unique roadside attraction in Greensburg, Indiana - their county courthouse has a tree that is growing out of its roof! Since the early 1870s! And it has become a symbol of the town, I love stories like this. Packed a lot in this day and will be dropping more videos soon of this Ohio Fall Roadtrip!
