This is our new harp and vocal arrangement of arguably one of the most known and loved songs of all time, “Amazing Grace.” Amazing Grace was written in 1772 by English poet, clergyman, and former slave ship master, John Newton. Newton’s words describe the joy and peace of a soul uplifted from despair to salvation through the gift of God’s grace. Interestingly, “Amazing Grace” is an autobiographical commentary on how Newton himself was spared from both physical and spiritual ruin. It describes the joyful outcome of the tale of a defiant man who manages again and again to escape danger, disease, abuse, and death, only to continue to return to his wicked ways. Before his conversion to Christianity, Newton had a sordid life, including an attempt to desert the Royal Navy, becoming a servant of an abusive slave trader, and eventually becoming a slave ship captain. He lived a life so depraved that even his rough shipmates found his behavior and language shocking. However, in 1748 after believing he might not survive a violent storm off the coast of Ireland, Newton called out to God for mercy, which began his journey to Christianity. After becoming an Anglican clergyman, he renounced his old ways and actively campaigned for the end of slavery, writing works describing the depravity and horrors of the Slave Trade. Close to Newton’s death in 1807, the act to abolish the Slave Trade finally became law and Newton, who was almost blind and near death, “rejoiced to hear the wonderful news.” Although not often done, we chose to sing all 7 verses that Newton wrote. Some of our long-time supporters might have already heard our harp-only version of this song, but we thought this powerful song of redemption and grace deserved a new harp and vocal arrangement for our new HARP REFLECTIONS album.

Lyrics:
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind but now I see
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed
Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home
The Lord has promised good to me
His Word my hope secures
He will my Shield and Portion be
As long as life endures
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail
And mortal life shall cease
I shall possess within the veil
A life of joy and peace
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
The sun forbear to shine
But God, who called me here below
Will be forever mine
When we’ve been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun
