These Deputies Made A BIG Mistake | Lawsuit Settled

Welcome back to the audit the law channel, A tourist from Michigan, Jon Schoonmaker, settled a lawsuit with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office after being falsely arrested for DUI. Schoonmaker and his wife were traveling through Port St. John in January 2018, looking for a SpaceX rocket that was scheduled to be launched across the Indian River that night. Dash camera video obtained from the Sheriff's Office by Schoonmaker's attorney shows his car drifting in his lane before he was pulled over. The deputy conducted a field sobriety test on Schoonmaker, which he claims he failed. Later, lab results confirmed that he was not intoxicated.
Schoonmaker filed a lawsuit against the Sheriff's Office for falsely arresting him. He settled with the agency in late March, where they agreed to pay him $45,000, issue a letter of apology from the sheriff's command staff, and schedule an in-person meeting with the Undersheriff Douglas Waller, who oversees the training of deputies. Schoonmaker's attorney said that the settlement allows them to move forward rather than push the incident under the rug. Unfortunately, similar incidents of false arrest and police misconduct have occurred in law enforcement agencies across the country.
Schoonmaker believes that there needs to be sensitivity training around understanding people's stories before arresting them. He also expressed his thoughts that justice is in the process of being served. The settlement with the Sheriff's Office allows Schoonmaker and his attorney to move forward. It is essential to recognize the importance of proper police training and the impact it has on the community. The incident with Schoonmaker highlights the need for law enforcement to recognize everyone's story and to ensure that they do not violate their rights.
