Fibrinolysis (thrombolysis) is the process of breaking down the clot (clot dissolution) into water soluble metabolites (fibrin degradation produces "FDP” aka fibrin split products).

Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) converts plasminogen into plasmin. Plasmin dissolves the fibrin thrombus into FDPs and D-dimer (d-dimer is produced via dissolution of the stabilized fibrin).

There are two types of plasminogen activator; Urokinase type plasminogen activator (UPA), and tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA).
