Honestly the King Song S18 had been one of my most anticipated EUC release of 2020. I was blown away by its design and of course intrigued by the possibility presented by the addition of a suspension system. And now that I had some solid riding time on this wheel and put it through its paces. Its finally time for me to talk about what I think of it. Is it the best thing since slice bread or a gimped slow, short range wheel? Does this wheel live up to the promise of having the best suspension of 2020? This week, my review of the King Song S18, Are you ready roll the intro! (A new beginning) This is the Bantam BRC 40, it was designed by Karl Probst at the request of the US army in 1940. Probst was a talented freelance engineer whom amazingly drafted the plan for what would eventually become the Jeep in just 18 hours. It was the first 4x4 ever mass produced with 650,000 built during World War II alone. And it was also during the war that jeep solidify its reputation for toughness, durability and versatility. And I think the addition of suspension is as important to electric unicycle as was going 4x4 to a car. With EUCs we only have a single contact patch and suspension helps keep it firmly planted to the ground as much as possible to improve not just comfort but power transferring and control.
That is the promise of the King Song S18. And it is hard to talk about this wheel without talking about its suspension design since it is pretty much build around it. Its where most of the engineering was focused on during its development since aside form the suspension. The specification of the s18 is somewhat underwhelming. The 2200 watt motor is likely recycled from the 18XL I rode when I was in Taiwan earlier this year, and the 1,100 wh battery is also the smallest amongst the new batch of flag ship 18” wheels released this year. At 55 lbs it isn’t much lighter than the V11 which carries an additional 400wh worth of batteries. And at $1900 it isn’t much cheaper either.
