Bio By She Rox All Female Bands: : Saarkie could easily be described as Africa’s answer to the Go-Go’s, at least by popularity standards and remain the most successful all female band from that country. Hailing from Pretoria, South Africa the band began their reign in 2005 while still in high school, and originally were a quintet and spent several years perfecting their sound, before releasing their debut album in 2009, “Listen” would go on and prove to be a strong starting mark for Saarkie. The follow up to their debut, 2011’s “Indentiteit”, would solidify the band in their local music scene and gained them numerous praise for their ability to mix rock, pop and numerous other music styles, all the while projecting positive and relevant messages in the songwriting, excellent musical abilities and great harmonies. By 2015 the band would become a trio with founding members Adele Fouche-Lead Vocals & Guitar, and drummer Lila Botha remaining along with long time bassist Lourene Mostert. The trio would go on the release the same year, what many have called the band’s most well known album, “Reisiger” which translates from Afrikaans to English as “Traveler”. The band has an interesting approach in naming their albums in their native language but sing in English, and have a similar feel to heavy weight bands as The Police and Dave Mathews Band. Constant touring and playing has built the trio a strong following and by 2017 they released the album “Queen Van Die Toorbos”, without missing a beat, Saarkie continued on after the departure of original bassist Lourene Mostert who was replaced by Mjon Van Blommestein. The new line up along with the new album would receive radio air play with the single “For Always” and landed the band a Ghoemia for best rock album, Africa’s equivalent to the U.S’s Grammy. Even though Saarkie has paid their rock dues in their native county, world wide success has eluded the band still, however interest abroad in the band is gaining momentum by fans and critics seeking an innovated band that are redefining the sound of today’s mundane commercial rock music.
