Indigenous Power Struggle

There are 175 indigenous and northern communities in Canada that are not connected to the electrical grid. The majority rely on aging generator systems that run on diesel flown, trucked or shipped into the areas at exorbitant economic and environmental cost. A lack of reliable energy causes blackouts and harmful power surges and limits economic growth and desperately needed infrastructure. Many on-grid indigenous communities also face mounting energy challenges. The Agenda examines energy access and poverty within Canada's indigenous population.
