◾ Kaziranga started in 1908 as a reserve forest to protect One horned rhinoceros and other wild animals . Kaziranga National Park is situated in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of the state of Assam,in India .On 1 June 1905,the Kaziranga proposed reserve forest was created with an area of 232 Km2 over the next three years ,the park area was extended by 152 Km2 .
◾In 1974 Kaziranga was designated a National park ,the first national park in the state of Assam.Then ,UNESCO declared Kaziranga a world heritage site in 1985. Kaziranga total area 430 Km2.
◾ The Kaziranga National Park is divided into four tourism zones which are the central zone or kaziranga zone , western zone or Bagori zone , Eastern zone or Agaratoli zone and Burapahar zone .
◾ Kaziranga is vast expanse of tall elephant grass , marshland and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests, criss-crossed by four major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and the park includes numerous small bodies of water .This is a large place with forest, grassland and wetland composed of a large variety of flora and fauna .
◾ Kaziranga was once home to seven species of vultures .About 99% of the stable vulture population was killed by kidney failure caused by consuming the veteniary drug diclofenac in domestic animals carcasses.Now, usage of diclofenac is banned in India . Vulture also important in our ecosystem . Kaziranga National Park was once home to seven species of vultures out of which , only four have survived . These are Indian vulture , Slender billed vulture and Indian white-rumped vulture.
◾Flood of Kaziranga :- Flooding and heavy rains have resulted in death of wild animals and damage to the conservation infrastructures.To escape the water logged areas ,many animals migrate to elevated regions outside the park boundaries where they are susceptible to hunting,hit by speeding vehicles or subject to reprisals by villagers for damaging their crops.
🔹 Expert believe that floods are necessary for kaziranga by virtue of its riverine ecosystem.The system won't survive without water.
The regenerative nature of floods helps replenish kaziranga water bodies and maintain its landscape, which is a mix of wetlands , grasslands and semi-evergreen semi-evergreen deciduous forests.
