Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS — Older Than The Sun ☄️

A comet older than the Sun itself just flew through our Solar System — and it's carrying water from 12 billion years ago.

3I/ATLAS is the third confirmed interstellar object ever detected. When NASA pointed the James Webb Space Telescope at it, they found 30 times more heavy water than any comet in our Solar System. The deuterium levels suggest it formed 10-12 billion years ago, during the universe's "cosmic noon" — before our Sun even existed.

This ancient messenger from another star system is a time capsule that tells us what conditions were like in the early Milky Way — and how common the building blocks for life really are.
