The Biel Chess Festival took place 16th-29th July 2011. World number one Magnus took clear first place with 19/30 (three points for a win, that is 5 wins and 4 draws and a single loss). Alexander Morozevich was a couple of points further back but again he had a good tournament too. Ni Hua took first place in the MTO Open alongside with 8.5/11 half a point clear of the field.

Magnus Carlsen won the ACCENTUS GM tournament of the 44th Biel Chess Festival with a score of 19/30 two points clear of Alexander Morozevich. This is Carlsen's second title in four visits. He had a comfortable draw in the final round against Caruana having already secured the title. This victory cements his position as world number one. Alexander Morozevich took second place with a second fine performance in a row after the Russian Higher League to finish on 17 points. Shirov and Vachier-Lagrave finished tied for 3rd.
