The First World War asked to Sardinia a blood tribute higher than any other Italian region.
In those years the island had just over 800.000 inhabitants, about 100.000 men (almost all of the adult male population) left their homes for the war and 13.602 perished in battle.
Many of these were "Sassarini", coming from all parts of the island.
These soldiers, averagely shorter than the enemy, were so determined, brave and extremely trained in hand to hand combat, that the Austro-Hungarians gave them the nickname "Devils" - which in Sardinian translates as "DIMONIOS"
