Since 1984, I had always loved this "happy" song by Bruce Springsteen. But at that time, even though I had every word memorized, I really couldn't have told you what the song was about. Then about 15 years later, I one day stopped to actually listen. To me, the lyrics didn't quite match up with the happy, upbeat sound . So I decided to create a different arrangement. In 1999, Amy Hueneman and I had our first official gig. And on that night, we performed this slow, solemn version. It was probably an odd choice for a setlist that was mostly jazz standards. But much to our surprise, it went over really well. In a small, but packed room, you could hear a pin drop. Twenty-two years later, we decided to record it.
