Web page loading speed is a crucial part of a site’s usability. Google considers page speed to be one of the 200 ranking factors that influence a website’s position in organic search results, and it definitely enriches user experience.

What is page speed?
It’s is the amount of time it takes to request a page and for it completely loaded in the browser. Slow page speeds increase bounce rates.

Why page speed is important?
Page speed affects the way users feel about a brand and its products and services. Pages with a longer load time tend to have higher bounce rates, meaning people just bounce off to another site rather than engaging with yours.

Also, Google loves faster sites. You could garner an extra boost in rankings simply by speeding up your WordPress site.

How to check your current WordPress site speed
There are lots of different ways of measuring page speed. And there’s no “right” metric that beats all of the others. They all have pros and cons.

Be prepared to get a bit flooded with information. Some of the key bits to focus on include: Overall site score, load time, and anything listed under “Improve page performance.”

Ways to improve your page speed

Find good hosting
Quality of hosting is one of the most important factors. You can only tweak up to your server’s limits, which can be affected by many factors – memory-allocated connection type and speed, how many sites are on the same server, and other factors.

Eliminate unnecessary plugins
The easiest step to speed up a WordPress site is to deactivate and delete any unnecessary plugins. Getting rid of unneeded plugins and unused themes will save you from a bunch of annoying update notices too.

Compress and optimize images
Images can make sites pop — but they also can slow sites down. Use the free plugin Smush to automatically compress images without reducing a lot of quality.

Reduce redirects
The problem with redirects is your visitors have to go through one or multiple connections before they land at the new location. Whether it's just one connection or various, your page will still take longer to load.

Cache web pages
Page caching lets a website store data to use to respond to search requests, which in the case of WordPress, means the pages that result from queries.

Monitor performance over time
Getting your site up to speed is great. Keeping there over time is even better. Rather than constantly running URLs through speed checkers, you can employ a performance monitoring tool to keep an eye on things for you. If a slowdown strikes, you’ll receive a timely alert.

That’s a lot of steps! But don’t stress — you don’t have to do them all at once. While there are quite a few tweaks you can apply to shave off milliseconds here and there, I hope what we covered today helps you and your website.
