Is Poppy the world's happiest dog?
Poppy came into our lives just at the right moment. We had just lost our rescue Doberman at 14 years old, who needed special care toward the end of her days. Poppy's journey to us was long but meant to be. Poppy traveled through Canada before coming to the U.S. and eventually to join our family.
She was originally from the Middle East, where she unfortunately was mistreated, which caused the damage to her spine resulting in a permanent paralysis to her lower half. But it thankfully didn't change her energetic and loving spirit. I tell people all the time that Poppy is truly the happiest dog I've ever had. I also affectionately refer to her as my angel from heaven. I first met Poppy through a coworker who was fostering her. And the connection was instant.
When you look beyond the imperfections, you see a dog that just wants to give and receive unconditional love. We like to say she's imperfectly perfect. It's been about two years since we adopted Poppy and not a day goes by that this little girl doesn't make me laugh and smile. Every morning starts with a walk to the dog park and Poppy can't wait to get there. It's gotten to the point where we enter the park, I let her off her leash and she sprints to the dog park area. And there, she's just like every other dog running, barking, playing and nudging everyone around to pet her. She doesn't let her limitations limit her ability to be a normal dog. Poppy has become very well known in our New Jersey neighborhood to the point where it's near impossible to take a stroll without getting stopped by several people. Poppy is a Papillon mix and we think between five and six years old, but she still plays like a puppy. She has a Doberman sister, that's about two years old now, and they are the best of friends.
But make no mistake, this 11-pound boss girl rules the house and always wins in a game of tug of war. Poppy has opened our eyes and our hearts to the joys that come with having a handicapable pet. And we hope that every time she rolls down the street in her wheels, that she inspires others to adopt pets, that too may be imperfectly perfect, just like her.
