(8 Nov 2018) AT 75, JONI MITCHELL IS ON THE MEND AND MAKING MUSIC AGAIN, SAYS FRIEND JAMES TAYLOR
Three long, hard years following a brain aneurysm, music legend Joni Mitchell is on the mend, according to longtime friend James Taylor.
"You know, Joni has had a long and arduous recovery from a really major event," Taylor explained on the arrivals line at a Los Angeles tribute concert Wednesday (7 NOVEMBER 2018) marking Mitchell's 75th birthday. "But she's doing so much better," Taylor continued, "And, I think, particularly, in the last six months, she's getting back to her instruments, she's getting back to her art. And those of us who love her and miss her presence as an artistic source are glad to see her coming around."
A PBS special, "Joni 75," featuring performances by Taylor, Americana legend Emmylou Harris and jazz pianist Diana Krall, among others, was taped over two nights at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
"Oh, what an honor," noted Harris. "Oh, she's just a giant among the artists of my generation. Her songwriting: There's nobody even close to her. I mean, in her style, in fact, I think, a lot of us were talking about how it was difficult to do some of those songs. We didn't want to take the Joni out of it. But we had to make them our own."
While most likely remember Mitchell for her folk-pop hits, Krall said it's Mitchell's jazz offerings that made their biggest impact.
"For me, it's been her work as a pianist that has been most influential on my work," Krall explained. "They talk a lot about guitar and the way she plays guitar and her open tunings. But, really, her work as a pianist as is really incredible and very challenging and interesting. And she's a great piano player. And she's a tremendous influence on me and my style as a pianist."
PBS has yet to announce an airdate for the special.
