Paolo Tomelleri Big Band - La Mer (feat. Nicki Parrott)
Swing Expo 2015 @ Teatro Dal Verme
After the great success of the previous events, the city of Milan hosted another show dedicated to the swing music. Connecting with the spirit of the 2015 Expo that took place in the Italian city the same year, the event showed how traditional music from all over the world influenced jazz and swing music, as well as jazz and swing music influenced folk dances and songs, in a journey through different countries.
The Big Band was directed by clarinettist Paolo Tomelleri and the show hosted a great number of international musicians and dancers.
“La Mer” (“The Sea”) is a French song composed by Charles Trenet. He wrote the song lyrics when he was only 16 years old, and composed the tune in 1943, at the age of 30. The song was first recorded only two years later, after the World War II, sang by the singer Roland Gerbeau. One year later, Trenet recorded his own version: it was a great success. Since then, “La Mer” became a classic song and a jazz standard. During the show the song was sung by Australian singer Nicki Parrott and performed by Paolo Tomelleri Big Band.
