48 HOURS IN VENICE, ITALY Travel Vlog // why we need to protect this precious city

Venice was breathtakingly beautiful. ✨

But people that come here need to know that this city used to be a very self-sufficient and resourceful group of islands before it got overran by tourism and wealthy real estate developers. Only 55,000 residents live here now compared to roughly 200,000 in the 1950s. After wealthy developers came and bought all the houses to convert into rental properties, locals were forced to move out due to rising house prices. This caused essential businesses such as barbershops, meat butchers, and tailor shops to go out of business.

Now, this city is surviving mainly out of tourism and sadly that comes with businesses that sell fake souvenirs or restaurants that serve overpriced food.

As beautiful as this city is, I walk around knowing that it is also fragile and yearning for respect. If you come, make sure that you travel responsibly. Support local businesses, explore the off-beaten paths, and show your love.
