The vine quilting motif works great in borders, sashing, as an all over design and can be adapted to fit different shapes as well. There is some practice of going back over lines and the basic movement of a feather, but more flexibility and whimsy in the final design. It can be a great starter motif as you are working to improve your skills and add more quilting designs to your repertoire.
Feathers are a staple in traditional quilting patterns, but can often be intimidating when trying to get the right flow and fit of the petals and backtracking over stitching. The quilted vine with help you practice the movement and flow of feathers, but without as much worry for perfection. We are going to start with a spine and work our way along it, creating a spiral on both sides. As you come back to the spine, try to stay on top of your line for good backtracking progress, but this motif is forgiving and if you go off the line a little, it will still look great! Also try to extend and shorten your spirals as needed to fill the space. This is another great skill to learn and practice that will help make your feathers better when you start quilting them.
You can use these free motion quilted vines to fill the entire quilt as an all over design (I like to alternate the direction if quilting it as an all over) or use it in borders, sashing, or to fill blocks. If you want to see examples of how to adapt to different quilt blocks and shapes, don't forget to head to the block where we've shared diagrams!
