Trump praises Manchin after conservative Democrat vows to keep filibuster in place

Former president Donald Trump has praised Joe Manchin for “doing the right thing” after the conservative Democratic senator announced he will vote against scrapping the filibuster and his party’s voting rights bill.

Senator Manchin, who is the only Democrat to hold statewide office in West Virginia, recently penned an opinion piece in his local newsletter which said abolishing the filibuster will hurt democracy.

“I believe that partisan voting legislation will destroy the already weakening binds of our democracy, and for that reason, I will vote against the For the People Act. Furthermore, I will not vote to weaken or eliminate the filibuster,” Senator Machin wrote.

Mr Trump told Fox News Senator Manchin’s decision would ensure the country does not lurch in a “far-left” direction.

“Well, it’s a very important thing. He’s doing the right thing and it’s a very important thing,” Mr Trump said.

“Otherwise you're going to be packing the court. You're going to be doing all sorts of very, very bad things that were unthinkable and were never even brought up during the election. Nobody brought this stuff up.”
