Snowy owls can survive tough Arctic winters, living year-round in regions like Alaska. But their population in North America has dropped dramatically over the last decade – by around 64%.
Now, scientists are closely monitoring the breeding patterns not just of snowy owls, but also of lemmings. As the birds’ main prey, the local rodent population has a huge effect on owl numbers. What could be causing the decline of these species down to the final third, and how might it affect the future of the Arctic?
