ADHD Attentional Training to Tame Strong Emotions
Those with ADHD feel strong and intense emotions
Which is why we have to train our attention
As the brains attention/emotion interface is so strongly linked.
Learning to zoom in and zoom out with our internal minds eye is one of the most important skills that we can develop.
And it is particularly helpful when it comes to managing strong and negative emotions because negative emotions capture the attention.
They make everything very small.
Necessarily, they invite us to narrow our focus and try to figure out what's going on. But actually, the movement we need to make the minute we see the construction is the widening and the opening of the attention.
We have some specific exercises in BMT that help us to do that
but just knowing we have this capacity, just like on a camera, to zoom in, to zoom out can be really helpful.
And if we train it in a moment of calm, we will be able to do it when we need it, which is when we are under threat and distress.
In BMT we find everyday moments to train.
