Affordable Gaming PC Build - DIY in 5 Ep 254
Balking at the price of the Switch 2? You can build a budget gaming PC for less. Learn how in this video!
One benefit of building a gaming PC is that you can prioritize price to performance ratio by choosing only the components that work best for you.
Set your budget and priorities
There is such a great variety of PC components, it might be tricky to decide where to compromise. It can be simpler to focus on top-value components for the games you play, like graphics, CPU, memory, or storage. All of these directly impact gaming performance. Other components can offer budget-friendlier options, such as older-generation models instead of the newest releases.
A GPU suited for you
Gaming PCs, unlike typical PCs, typically have dedicated GPUs. CPU-integrated graphics may suffice for CS:Go, Roblox, or Rocket League, but most gamers will want a little extra juice, especially for modern AAA games. The trick to selecting the right CPU for your affordable gaming PC is to balance performance with cost. Playing at 1080px instead of 1440px will save money by selecting a mid-range card that still offers a smooth experience. An older GPU will avoid the premium prices you’d pay for the newest model.
Motherboard & CPU
The motherboard is the foundation of your system, where all other components will connect. The CPU is your system’s brain. The two work together, so must be compatible. Luckily, a basic motherboard should suffice for most builds, unless the plan is to either overclock or use multiple high-performance Gen 5 SSDs. Building on a budget means no need to invest in a high-end motherboard with superfluous features, freeing you to invest in components which directly enhance gaming performance. However, your CPU can affect all manner of game logic, physics, AI and other background tasks. Any gaming CPU should be able to keep up with your GPU to avoid bottlenecks. A CPU that’s a couple of generations old, with a good balance of core count, clock speed and price can still provide decent gaming performance.
Savvy storage
A gaming PC needs storage like pizza needs cheese. You should prioritize a gaming SSD for this type of build, since it’s where your game library will live, and an SSD will provide faster boot and load times than a hard disk drive. Kingston FURY Renegade SSD is made for gamers, providing great responsiveness and quick boot times for your new gaming rig.
Lights out
If you’re building an affordable gaming PC, remember your priorities. RGB RAM adds visual appeal to a build but no practical advantage. Regular RAM is more economical, saving money for you to invest in other performance-enhancing components (like your SSD or GPU). This also goes for other components with RGB options. You can always augment your build with light strips or other accessories, for $15 or less.
On the case & PSU
Prioritizing components is important. Saving on those that don’t make games run faster is smart. However, a PC case with decent airflow and a solid power supply unit is also important. A PSU with enough wattage and an 80+ rating is essential. Consider features like over-voltage and short-circuit protection too. Many system builders sleep on the PSU, but getting a quality component can save many headaches down the road.
To summarize, building an affordable gaming PC doesn’t mean having to compromise on performance. With prioritization of key components and avoidance of unnecessary extras, it’s possible to build a computer that delivers an excellent gaming experience for your favorite games on a budget.
