Processor (CPU)
The processor is an integral component of video editing performance. The CPU handles most of the playback, program performance (Premiere Pro or Davinci Resolve), rendering, and exporting. It is important to choose a laptop that has a well-ranked CPU.

Historically I have been a stickler for the i7 processor, but during my search for the best budget video editing laptop, I saw a need to consider i5 processors in this line-up. Simply choosing between i7 and i5 is not enough. Is the i7-8565U or the i5-8300H better? The i5 outranks the i7 by over 10% on multiple benchmarks for a number of reasons. So when it comes to choosing the proper CPU for video editing it is important to take the time to find out what all of those unhelpful numbers mean. I have done the due diligence to search out the right machines to fit your needs in this budget video editing laptop collection.

Graphic Processing Unit (GPU)
To select the right video editing laptop the GPU is an important component to consider. Without a dedicated GPU you end up putting a lot of extra stress on your CPU. With a dedicated GPU you are spreading the workload across both components. This allows the CPU to free up space to focus on the CPU intensive tasks.

The reason that GPUs can share the workload is due to the “Cores” a GPU possesses. The more cores the more ability the GPU will have to share the workload. My benchmark recommendation for video editing laptops is the GTX 1050 or higher. The GTX 1050 has 640 cores. One of the most powerful GPUs on the market the RTX 2080 has 2,944 cores. The RTX 2080 is a far more helpful GPU and you can see why based on the Cores alone.

Ok, that is enough technical talk. Let’s keep moving forward.

Remote Access Memory (RAM)
Ram is important. And it is far easy for me to explain than the GPU headache. Every time you open a program (Chrome, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, etc…) you are using RAM memory. The more RAM memory you have the faster your computer will run. As a general rule 8GB of RAM will allow you to edit small 1080p projects. 16B of RAM can handle larger 1080p projects and smaller 4k projects. 32GB of RAM is suited for 4k projects. If your laptop is running slow, consider shutting down other programs while editing.

Hard Drives
What hard drive do you need? SSD or HDD. I recommend SSD whether you are video editing, designing, or photo editing. Solid-State Drives are faster and more reliable than Hard Disk Drives. SSDs do not have moving parts HDD has moving parts. This alone causes some issues when your computer gets jostled in your bag or accidentally dropped off a couch or end table.

Now that you are armed with laptop recommendations and the rationale behind the choices I made you are ready to make a qualified decision. Happy hunting. Talk soon. Ben G Kaiser.
