Gillespie Volcano Geoglyphs - Gila Bend Mountains - Sonoran Desert Wilderness Geoglyph Site

In the winter of 2022-2023 I filmed these geoglyphs along a bajada in the Gila Bend Mountains - Sonoran Desert wilderness. Rock art includes not only petroglyph (carved, pecked, or scratched) and pictograph (painted or stenciled with pigments) imagery, but also deliberate arrangements of rocks and gravels and the removal of patina on stone pavements. Three of the prehistoric cultures that are associated with this area include the Western Archaic, Hohokam and Patayan. This site and others hold special significance to the descendants of these prehistoric cultures. To quote Barnaby Lewis, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer - Gila River Indian Community ...
