Portrait Lens Showdown: Nikon 85mm 1.8 VS Sigma Art 1.4 (Engagement Session Photoshoot Tutorial BTS)

Today's video is all about:
-Showcasing how to use a sigma art 35mm 1.4 for the best portraits you can take during an engagement session (or wedding/landscape)
-Showcasing how to use a nikon 85mm 1.8 lens (on a budget) to get amazing compression, tight photos, that show real emotion.
-Balancing why I choose each lens during a proffesional photo shoot in each scene and what style of results I receive.

Choosing a lens is like choosing the right seasoning on a steak, different seasoning can produce majorly different results. Today we are showcasing two lenses to show the balance of each one and why I choose each one in each scene.

The sigma art 35 1.4 is an AMAZING lens, very sharp, quick autofocus, small, and can produce amazing portraits and landscape photos. I love using this up close once my client is more at ease in the shoot, alongside of stepping back and capturing the entire scene. It is however more expensive.

The Nikon 85mm 1.8 is a great lens, light, cheaper, and sharp. You can be a good distance from your client without making them feel uncomfortable since you are so close. It's the best value for your buck if you are just getting into wedding photography and engagement photography since if you are a second shooter you could rock this all day! It's close enough to capture the emotions but just wide enough you can step back and capture the scene. You can't capture indoor photos if you have a tight space so it's key to have a wider focal lenght just in case, but between these two lenses I could shoot my entire wedding season on them.

How to choose a lens?
-What are you shooting? Do you need a shallow depth of field, quick autofocus? Or can you have a shallow depth of feild slower focus? Budget?
-Focal length has a huge impact on the feel of a photo, google each focal length and see which length looks great to your eye and compression.
-Prime vs zoom? I love my prime lenses, it feels so real to shoot at 1.4, f2, with a prime lens, relative to f2.8/f4 on a 24-70 and you can easily zoom in. I must say once a year I shoot on a 24-70 for a first dance and it makes life easy, however, doesn't feel right when editing.

To each their own! the most fun part about photography is choosing the gear YOU want to run with :) Whatever balance works best for you, I'm guiding you with some references but at the end of the day you get to choose your lenses, set up, that fits your photography needs, budget, don't let anyone tell you you have to choose a certain style of gear or you suck. You rock tho :)

Enjoy the video and enjoy the behind the scenes! can't wait to upload the live editing session with you all!
