AWS re:Invent 2017: Mainframe Possible: Migrating an Enterprise Mainframe to AWS (DEM45)

Enterprises are sometimes apprehensive about the feasibility of migrating their mainframes to the cloud. They believe they lack the required domain expertise. In this session, we follow the journey Candid Partners took to help a large enterprise migrate a 25-year-old mission-critical IBM mainframe to AWS. We review the platform transformation plan for balancing costs and functional capability while following a timeline. We also look at the many facets of running mainframe software on AWS, including legacy database systems, custom languages, job schedulers, code compilation, performance, emulation, generational storage, disaster recovery, discretionary access control, batch processing, and online transactions. The patterns we present in this session are broadly applicable to large multinational enterprises using mainframes.
