This Trailblazing Neurobiologist Studies the Science of Pleasure and Pain
Ishmail Abdus-Saboor, a neurobiologist at Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute, retraces his path to Columbia, explains his fascination with a rodent that rarely feels pain, and offers advice to aspiring Black scientists.
“The most important thing for us to understand about the brain is how the brain gives rise to the mind. How is it that patterns of neural activity in the brain govern how we think, how we move, how we act, how we talk, how we treat one another?” Abdus-Saboor said. “We think there's much to learn about how animals engage in their sensory world.”
