Types of Fiction in English Literature
In this video, we are discussing the various types of fiction in English Literature. Having a thorough understanding of the types of fiction genres can help in understanding a literary work. Questions are often asked in UGC NET/SET exams on the types of fiction in Literature.
The most common types of fiction book genres are : Bildungsroman, Kunstleroman, Campus Novel, Chivalric Romance, Apocalyptic Literature, Dystopian and Utopian fiction, Epistolary Novel, Gothic Novel, Historical Novel, Science Fiction, Mystery Fiction, Picaresque novel, Magic Realism and Metafiction.
Bildungsroman Genre means growth novel. Some Bildungsroman examples are Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. A sub-category of Bildungsroman is Kunstleroman Genre that means 'artist' s novel'.
Campus Novel definition is any novel set in and around the campus of a university. Campus Novel examples are Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis and Disgrace by J. M. Coetzee.
Chivalric Romance literary term refers to prose/verse narrative that tells the story of a chivalric knight on a quest.
Apocalyptic Literature is a genre of prophetical writing.
Dystopian Fiction and Utopian fiction are Speculative fiction that explores the possible social and political conditions in future.
Epistolary novel examples are The Color Purple by Alice Walker. Gothic Novel examples are Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.
Historical novel is set in the past and often focuses on a single historical event. Mystery fiction focuses on a mysterious situation or crime to be solved.

Picaresque novel talks about the adventures of a roguish hero of low social class. Picaresque Novel examples are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.
Metafiction is fiction about fiction. Metafiction examples are Don Quixote by Cervantes and Orlando by Virginia Woolf.
