Anchoring and Search on Sea

Anchoring a vessel and getting underway from an anchorage is a ship handling manoeuvre that shipmasters are required to do regularly. The Master must plan his anchoring manoeuvre before anchoring. To plan his anchoring manoeuvre the Master must consult and take into account the following:

o The Sailing Directions, for port information, hazards etc.
o Local Port regulations for anchoring guidelines at the port
o The direction and strength of wind and current at the time of anchoring
o The manoeuvring room available during the approach
o The water depth
o The nature of the seabed, navigational hazards, and the number of vessels at anchorage if possible

One must always approach the anchorage at slow speed, taking into account the direction of the wind and current.
