Abandoned History: Jaxa, A Polish State in China

Ever heard of a Polish-speaking kingdom in the middle of Manchuria? Today we explore the history of Jaxa and Fort Albazino.

After the Russian explorer Yerofey Khabarov’s expedition collapsed into mutiny and Qing intervention, the Amur region became a lawless frontier. Enter Nicefor Chernichowski, a man who went from a prisoner of war to the "Lord of Jaxa." We analyze how he played the Russians against the Chinese to maintain independence, the sophisticated fortifications built by Prussian engineers, and the eventual Treaty of Nerchinsk in 1689 that changed the map of Asia forever.

We also take a sidebar to look at the Albazinians, the descendants of Russian Cossacks who joined the Qing military and survived as a distinct ethnic group until the mid-20th century.
