Mini tutorial on my OBS workflow for streaming and recording videos
From late March 2020, the whole education sector moved to remote teaching. I'm glad to have been always exploring and experimenting with technology for teaching, as it lessened my shock in this emergency pivot! I did have to invest time in learning new tricks, and in this video I share the workflow I settled in for using OBS Studio to record and stream videos for teaching and for remote presentations.
The video is a quick tour of how I set up some essential scenes: 1) a virtual background (like a fancy bookshelf) with eye-level camera-feed overlay and a chroma key filter with green screen; 2) a full computer display with the camera overlay in the corner—in all cases, when I mention the camera overlay, I can turn it off and on as needed—; 3) a window source from the slide show app, with my camera overlay; 4) a window source of my browser, where I will be showing a web-based document, with my cam on top; and 5) a window source from QuickTime using the iPad feed in screen-recording mode: this let's me use hand annotations or drawings.
