Hearing First Time + Ellen DeGeneres
Before posting a challenge to this video, or asking "How can she talk?", please see the two "UPDATES" below -
The story of this 29 year old girl hearing for the first time has become famous. What happened on the Ellen DeGeneres Show is also noteworthy, so I simply put both clips together to enable people to see them at the one place at the same time.
Enjoy!
UPDATE#1: (19th of October 2012)
I am astonished at the number of comments people have posted challenging how a deaf person could possibly be able to speak.
To those doubting individuals, please do yourself a favour and Google "Helen Keller". Helen was probably the most famous Deaf and Blind woman of the 40's, 50's and 60's. She was also one of the most famous Lecturers and Public Speakers of her time - Yes, that's right, she could not see or hear, but travelled the world speaking to huge audiences!
Many deaf people learn to "feel" sound through their fingers and vibrations on objects such as table-tops. This gives them the ability to reproduce such sounds by comparing the vibrations their own voices are making, even though they are completely deaf.
So, to those people challenging such things, please do not remain ignorant forever, go and do some research!
UPDATE#2: (3rd of July 2012)
Many people are particularly sceptical as to how Sarah hears the Doctor speak when she has her eyes covered (1:05). The following excerpt is from Sarah's own Blog -
Q: "How did she know what the doc was saying without looking at her mouth?"
A: Um. I got my ear turned on :) How do YOU know what people are saying? You HEAR them. I don't mean to be rude, but really? I don't know, I can't explain the brain or how it works. I just know my ear works and I heard her clear as a bell. (which was awesome)
