WHAT IS TASHKENT: Traditional? Modern? What’s the TRUE face of Uzbekistan’s capital city?

Welcome to the premier episode of my Tashkent city series!
And why not? 😉
In the Republic of Uzbekistan where the Silk Route cities of Samarkand and Bukhara and Khiva get all the love, I wanted to extend some of that love to the capital city, Tashkent.
It’s a really underrated city, and for those keen to understand the urban pulse, not just of Uzbekistan, but all of Central Asia, I felt it was important to return to this city.

The question for me when I visited Tashkent for the first time five years ago was: what is Uzbekistan?
What is Tashkent?
Back then, my answer was: this is a solidly, oriental city with firm Soviet stripes and a traditional lens on the rest of the world.
Today, that answer is certainly wrong!

Tashkent is a fascinating blend of the old and the new and what a city can truly do once it sets its mind to it.
