It has been one year since anti-government protests started in Hong Kong on June 9, 2020. On that day, an estimated 1 million people took to the streets to demonstrate against an extradition bill which would have allowed fugitives to be sent to mainland China and other jurisdictions with which Hong Kong has no exchange arrangement. Unrest became increasingly violent for the rest of 2019, and while it stopped as the coronavirus pandemic began, protests resumed in early May 2020 over a national anthem bill and Beijing’s move to introduce a national security law.
