Vanadzor Families Awaiting Housing Assistance

(Armenian-language video. For the English version, visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0buZFtgp5Hw).

Nearly three decades after the 1988 Northern Armenia earthquake, which leveled block after block of apartment buildings, hundreds of families in Vanadzor are still waiting for housing assistance. In 2017, 500 families — totaling more than 3,000 people — still languished in so-called temporary huts.

These dwellings, also known as domiks, are extremely cramped, rickety hovels which lack even the most basic of amenities and human comforts.

This 2017 video tells the story of two Vanadzor families, the Yeganyans and the Kotsinyans, who have been living in the inhuman conditions of crumbling, rat-infested, water-damaged domiks ever since the earthquake. The dampness and other unsanitary conditions of these huts have also left members of both families with chronic illnesses, including rheumatoid arthritis.

The Yeganyans and Kotsinyans are desperately awaiting a helping hand to end their plight.

It takes only $25,000 to change the life of a struggling family in Vanadzor. The amount covers the costs of purchasing an apartment, renovating it, furnishing it, and equipping it with all necessary appliances.
