Two Barred Crossbill in Sweden

Videoscoped 4K footage of a small flock of Two-barred Crossbill which spent the wnter of 2014/15 at Lötsjön, in Sweden. The birds freqented a Larch tree during their stay and were widely viewed by many birders. These birds are specialist feeders of Larch cones, which they are specially evolved to deal with by way of the crossed mandibles on their remarkable bills. The species is rare in Sweden, normally being found further to the east in Russia. Three years ago a massive failure in the Larch crop saw the species erupt westwards in large numbers as they were forced to find food. Numbers have since returned to more normal levels here in Sweden, though a small number of birds still linger. They are remarkable birds, full of character and very parrot like in their actions. The females are rather dull in comparison the the vivid red plumaged adult males. Videoscoped with Panasonic GH4, Swarovski ATX 95 scope and ATX Adaptor. Edited in Final Cut Pro X.
