PALAZZO MASSIMO (Museo Nazionale Romano): imperial Rome treasures
Palazzo Massimo has an incredible collection of some of the most impressive statues- marble and bronze- from the Roman world, Greek and Roman era statuary, rare public calendars (oldest and best preserved) , collections from imperial villas like Hadrian's Villa and Nero's villa at Antium, bronze sculptural remains from Caligula's ships of Nemi, frescoes and mosaics, including reconstructed rooms from the Augustan-era "Farnesina" riverside villa that include floors and stucco ceilings. The collection also boasts an enormous coin collection and the scepter and insignia of Maxentius found on the Palatine slopes in 2009. It is a truly extraordinary collections that chronicles the history of late Republican Rome through Late Antiquity.
This is the first of a series that will highlight the collection in Palazzo Massimo, and part of our ongoing series on Museo Nazionale Romano, which is composed of 4 unique museums in Rome:
